International Desk, May 20, 2025 : Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has expressed skepticism about the prospects of reaching a nuclear agreement with the United States. Speaking at an event in Tehran on Tuesday, Khamenei remarked, “We don’t think it will yield any results. We don’t know what will happen.” The statement was made during a ceremony honoring former Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash.
Khamenei referenced past nuclear talks during the tenure of former President Hassan Rouhani, noting that those discussions failed to produce meaningful outcomes. His comments come as U.S. President Donald Trump recently claimed that Iran had agreed to certain terms following four rounds of talks in Oman since April 12. The next round of negotiations between the two nations’ representatives is reportedly scheduled for later this week.
Khamenei also rejected any commitment to halting Iran’s uranium enrichment program. This follows Trump’s decision during his first term in 2015 to withdraw the U.S. from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a nuclear deal between Iran and world powers. Trump has warned that failure to reach an agreement could lead to military action by the U.S. and Israel against Iran.
Iran has consistently maintained that its nuclear program is entirely peaceful and denies any intention of developing nuclear weapons. Seven years ago, the U.S. imposed sweeping sanctions on Iran. Addressing this, Khamenei stated that it is incorrect to say Iran will not be allowed to pursue nuclear enrichment, as the country is not waiting for anyone’s permission.
