The National Citizens Party (NCP) has announced a protest rally in front of the Election Commission (EC) office on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, demanding the reconstitution of the EC and the holding of local government elections. The announcement was made by party leaders during a press briefing on Tuesday night (May 20).
NCP Convener Nahid Islam stated, “The Election Commission is acting in a biased manner, which is why we cannot place our trust in it.” He demanded the immediate reconstitution of the EC. He further said, “Since August 5, everything has been deliberately steered toward national elections. The Chief Adviser has indicated that elections will be held by June. We are not opposed to elections, but in the current situation, local government elections are essential.” He also called for the announcement of dates for a constituent assembly and national elections.
Regarding Dhaka North’s administrator Md. Ejaz, Nahid clarified, “NCP has no connection with him. Some political parties are raising allegations against him due to their failure to secure tenders. The government should investigate this matter.” He added, “The interim government’s role is not to satisfy any political party but to work for public welfare. Holding local elections can resolve the crisis and help the EC regain public trust.”
NCP Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary remarked, “Due to the EC’s biased conduct, we will take to the streets tomorrow.” Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain added, “The EC’s role in the mayoral candidacy case of Ishraq Hossain has created complications. We have no confidence in this commission.” He confirmed that NCP will hold a protest rally in front of the EC office at 11 a.m. on Wednesday.
