Dhaka, May 18, 2025: Supporters of BNP leader Ishrak Hossain have been staging protests in front of Nagar Bhaban for the fourth consecutive day, demanding that he be sworn in as the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).
On Sunday (May 18), the protesters also called for the resignation of Local Government Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan.
Blocking the road in front of Nagar Bhaban since morning, the demonstrators chanted slogans such as “No more delays with the oath-taking,” “We demand Ishrak Hossain’s oath immediately,” and “People’s mayor Ishrak Bhai, no other mayor will do.” Due to the ongoing agitation, service operations at Nagar Bhaban have been suspended.
The protesters allege that the Law Adviser and the Local Government Adviser are obstructing Ishrak Hossain’s oath-taking process. They further claim that the interim government is disrespecting the court by not implementing the verdict declaring Ishrak as mayor.
Notably, on March 27, the First Joint District Judge and Election Tribunal of Dhaka declared Ishrak Hossain as the mayor of DSCC. On April 22, the Election Commission sought the opinion of the Law Ministry regarding the publication of the gazette, and on April 27, it published a gazette declaring Ishrak Hossain as the new mayor. However, Law Adviser Asif Nazrul claimed that the gazette was published before the ministry’s opinion was provided. On May 13, the Election Commission informed the Local Government Division that it would not appeal against the tribunal’s verdict.
The protesters assert that despite the completion of legal procedures, the delay in the oath-taking is due to the government’s advisers. They have demanded immediate action to ensure Ishrak Hossain’s swearing-in as mayor.
