Campus, May 15, 2025 Professor Dr. Rois Uddin, General Secretary of the Jagannath University Teachers’ Association, has announced a ‘shutdown’ of the university until three key demands and justice for attacks on teachers and students are met.
The announcement was made on Thursday (May 15) after discussions with protesting students during an ongoing movement in Kakrail.
Dr. Rois Uddin stated, “We have added the demand for justice for attacks on our teachers and students to our three-point demands. Until these are fulfilled, we will not return to campus, effectively keeping the campus shut down.”
On Wednesday (May 14), hundreds of students began a ‘Long March to Yamuna’ from the campus toward the Chief Adviser’s office. They broke through several police barricades but faced resistance at Kakrail crossing. Clashes ensued, involving stone-throwing, chases, baton charges, sound grenades, and tear gas, with police dispersing the students. At least 38 people, including teachers, students, and journalists, were injured.
Around 10 p.m., Information and Broadcasting Adviser Mahfuz Alam visited the site to speak with students. An agitated student threw a bottle at him. Mahfuz assured that the Chief Adviser would soon meet with university authorities to address the demands, emphasizing the government’s willingness to listen to reasonable movements. However, the students continued their protest, maintaining their stance on the streets of Kakrail into the late night, with many sleeping on the roads and chanting slogans intermittently.
On Monday, a student-teacher rally was held on campus. On Thursday, university representatives and the teachers’ association met with UGC officials to discuss budget increases and housing crises, but students alleged that the UGC provided vague assurances without committing to solutions.
Students’ Demands:
- Housing scholarships for 70% of students starting from the 2025-26 fiscal year until proper housing is ensured.
- Approval of the full proposed budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year without cuts.
- Approval of the second campus project in the next ECNEC meeting and its implementation as a priority project.
- Justice for the police attacks on teachers and students.
