30 May 2025 : Due to a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal, power supply across various regions of Bangladesh has been severely disrupted, directly impacting the telecommunications sector. Over 5,000 mobile network towers have been shut down due to power outages, leaving many areas with limited or no network services. On Friday (May 30, 2025), Foyez Ahmed Taiyeb, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser for the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology, shared this information via a verified Facebook post.
Low-Pressure System Disrupts Telecom Services in Bangladesh, Over 5,000 Mobile Towers Shut Down
He reported that, as of Friday morning, 5,904 mobile towers or sites, accounting for approximately 35.8% of the country’s total sites, are completely non-functional due to the storm and tidal surges caused by the low-pressure system. The most affected regions include Barisal, South Sylhet, Tangail, Chandpur, Mymensingh, North Dhaka, Cumilla, Noakhali, and South Chattogram, where mobile signals and internet services are largely unavailable.
Foyez Ahmed further noted that 8,262 mobile towers, or 44% of the total, are experiencing ‘mains failure’ due to power disruptions. Currently, 64.2% of the country’s sites remain operational. Telecom operators and tower companies have connected portable generators to 624 sites as an alternative measure, with an additional 504 generators en route to restore services.
He stated, “Due to heavy rainfall, telecom sites have been damaged. Mobile operators, tower companies, and rural electrification officials are working tirelessly to restore network services.”
Efforts are ongoing to address the crisis, with authorities and service providers striving to bring the network back online as quickly as possible.
