Dhaka, 30 May, 2025 : After a day filled with dramatic developments, the National Sports Council (NSC) issued a notification late Thursday night, cancelling Faruque Ahmed’s nomination as a director of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). The NSC’s secretary-signed notification stated that the decision was made after reviewing a no-confidence motion from eight BCB directors and a fact-finding committee’s report on issues related to the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). The move was deemed necessary to ensure the smooth functioning of BCB operations.
On Wednesday night, Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan met with Faruque Ahmed and conveyed the government’s reluctance to retain him as BCB president. Initially, Faruque requested time to make a decision but later declared to the media that he would not resign. In response, eight BCB directors submitted a six-page petition outlining allegations of unilateral decision-making, favoritism, and negligence in approving BPL franchises, expressing no confidence in Faruque. Additionally, a fact-finding committee’s report held Faruque responsible for BPL-related failures. Based on these factors, the NSC cancelled his nomination just before 11 PM.
Former Bangladesh captain Aminul Islam Bulbul has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Faruque. Aminul confirmed that the Sports Ministry contacted him, and he has secured approval from the International Cricket Council (ICC), where he currently works, to take up a key role in the BCB until its elections. However, he noted that no direct communication from the government has occurred since the initial outreach.
Sources also indicate that the BCB’s Chief Executive Officer, Nizamuddin Chowdhury Sujon, may be relieved of his duties, with Senior Media Manager Rabeed Imam being a strong contender to replace him.
Cricket stakeholders believe this sudden instability in the BCB is linked to the upcoming board elections, irregularities in BPL ticket sales, and the Anti-Corruption Commission’s (ACC) investigations involving influential former and current directors. This situation raises concerns about potential ICC sanctions, as government interference in cricket board affairs violates ICC regulations, as seen in past cases with Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka.
