Dhaka, May 5, 2025 : The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) in Bangladesh has mandated that prior approval is now compulsory for sending any pathological samples or specimens abroad.
This directive was issued in an office order signed by Dr. Abu Hossain Md. Moinul Hasan, Director (Hospitals and Clinics) at DGHS, on Monday, May 5, 2025.
According to the order, any private healthcare institution sending samples abroad without DGHS approval will be committing a punishable offense under the law. This regulation applies to samples sent for diagnostic, research, or other experimental purposes.
Health sector stakeholders believe this decision will strengthen oversight and accountability in the country's healthcare system. Previously, many private institutions sent various samples abroad without proper regulation or government approval, raising concerns about the purpose, destination, and security of these samples.
The mandatory approval process is expected to safeguard national security and personal privacy while ensuring compliance with ethical guidelines for sample usage. Additionally, it aims to curb fraudulent practices and allegations of fake testing under the guise of sending samples abroad.
The DGHS has stated that this directive is effective immediately, and all private institutions must comply. Any violation will result in legal action against the concerned institution.
