DNCC Appoints Volunteers to Reclaim 33 Canals and Lakes in Dhaka

Dhaka, May 5, 2025 :The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has initiated a volunteer recruitment program to reclaim and restore 33 canals and lakes in Dhaka, aiming to eliminate encroachments, reduce pollution, and promote afforestation along their banks. DNCC

Administrator Mohammad Ejaz announced this during a meeting held on Monday at the Nagar Bhaban in Gulshan, where local volunteers were engaged for tree plantation activities along the water bodies.

Ejaz stated that volunteers will work on 29 canals under DNCC’s jurisdiction, lakes managed by RAJUK, and four canals under Dhaka South City Corporation. The DNCC will supply trees, while designated gardeners will assist volunteers in planting and maintaining native species such as Hijal and Jarul along the canal banks. Volunteers will also participate in social mapping, planning, and designing to ensure effective afforestation.
Several volunteer organizations, including River and Social Development Bangladesh, Green Voice, Community Volunteers, Community Town Federation, Nagarabad, CDC, Ashar Alo, Youth Mentor, Brights, Alokito Kori, Finis Mondal Bangladesh, UNDP, Lal Sabuj Society, Young Climate Network, Eco Town Network Global, and OAB Foundation, will collaborate with DNCC to keep the canals free from encroachments and pollution while promoting green initiatives.
During the meeting, canal segments were allocated to volunteers based on their convenience to ensure coordinated efforts. Responding to a volunteer’s query, Ejaz assured that ponds in Dhaka would soon be made visually appealing, with the Dhaka District Administration planning to excavate and develop several ponds for public use in the near future.
The event was attended by DNCC’s Chief Engineer Brigadier General Md. Moin Uddin, Chief Waste Management Officer Commodore ABM Samsul Alam, other DNCC officials, and volunteers.
