Sirajganj, May 2, 2025 – A shocking discovery in Rayganj, Sirajganj, has sent ripples of alarm through the community as authorities uncovered a clandestine ‘mini torture chamber’ inside a house in Sonaram village, Chandai Kona Union. The facility was allegedly used for illegal activities, including torture, extortion, forced land transfers, and even organ trafficking, according to local reports.
On the early morning of Friday, May 2, police, local residents, and journalists descended on the site after receiving information about the secret operation. The house contained multiple small, sealed rooms, suspected to have been used as a hub for illicit activities. Locals reported that the building was rarely seen with any visitors, adding to its secretive nature.
Two individuals, Abdul Jabbar (75) from Purba Paikora village and Shilpi Khatun (48) from Lakshmi Bishnu Prasad village, managed to escape from the facility late Thursday night. The duo reportedly dug a tunnel through the floor using a pair of sharp scissors over several days to secure their freedom. After reuniting with their families, they revealed harrowing details of their captivity, sparking widespread outrage.
Shilpi Khatun recounted being held captive for nearly five months, initially at another location before being transferred to the ‘torture chamber.’ She alleged that she was periodically injected with unknown substances and claimed that a group, including a local quack doctor named Arafat, a union council member Sharif, and others named Kamrul, Hafizul, and Panna, were involved in her detention. The perpetrators allegedly wore masks during their interactions. Abdul Jabbar, who was also held in the same facility, is currently in critical condition and receiving treatment at the Rayganj Upazila Health Complex.
Abdul Jabbar’s son, Shafiqul Islam, revealed that his father went missing on November 8, 2024, and despite filing a General Diary (GD) with the police on November 12, no trace of him was found until his escape. Locals allege that the house, owned by Jahurul Islam, was rented out to Nazmul Hossen Arafat, the quack doctor, who, along with his associates, operated the facility under the cover of night.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Rayganj Police Station, Asaduzzaman Asad, confirmed that a suspect named Arafat has been detained, and multiple law enforcement teams are investigating the case. “We are verifying whether this is a genuine ‘torture chamber.’ The situation is under control, but the crowd is significant,” he stated.
The incident has raised serious concerns about hidden criminal networks in the area, with residents claiming that the house had long been a center for suspicious activities. Authorities are continuing their investigation to uncover the full extent of the operation and bring those responsible to justice.
