Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir Residents Ordered to Stock Two Months' Food Amid Rising Tensions

International Desk, May 2, 2025: In response to escalating tensions following an attack in Poonch, Jammu and Kashmir, residents of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) near the India-Pakistan Line of Control (LoC) have been instructed to stockpile food for two months. The directive was issued by PoK Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwarul Haq on Friday, May 2, 2025.

Addressing local media, Haq said, “People in 13 constituencies near the LoC have been asked to stock food supplies for two months. Additionally, a PKR 1 billion fund has been established to ensure the availability of food, medicine, and other essentials in these areas.” He further noted that both government and private machinery have been deployed near the border to maintain roads and infrastructure.
Fearing potential Indian military action, authorities have also ordered the closure of all madrasas in PoK for 10 days, effective from Thursday, through an official notice. While some officials attributed the closure to heatwave conditions, Hafiz Nazir Ahmed, Director of PoK’s Religious Affairs Department, told Reuters that the decision stemmed from concerns about possible Indian strikes targeting religious institutions. “We are facing two heatwaves—one from the weather and another from [Indian Prime Minister] Narendra Modi,” Ahmed said, adding, “We held a meeting with PoK and Gilgit-Baltistan officials yesterday and unanimously decided on this closure to avoid risking the lives of innocent children in our madrasas.”
These measures highlight the growing apprehension of a military escalation in the region, prompting PoK authorities to prioritize civilian safety and preparedness.
