Dhaka, May 18, 2025 : Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus has stated that the national election could be held as early as December this year but will not be delayed beyond June 2026. He also confirmed that he will not participate in the election. These remarks were made in a report published by The Economist on Thursday, May 15.
In his interview with The Economist, Dr. Yunus highlighted that the interim government has successfully stabilized inflation and the banking sector. However, economic growth remains weak, and the political situation is still fragile. Nine months after the revolution, implementing significant changes has proven challenging.
Dr. Yunus further noted that a consensus commission will work with political parties to draft the ‘July Charter,’ which will pave the way for the election and contribute to building a ‘new Bangladesh.’ However, achieving consensus is not straightforward. Disagreements have already emerged among political parties and the public regarding which commissions should be prioritized. Some argue for a commission focused on the ready-made garment sector, the backbone of the country’s economy, while others believe the education sector has not been given due importance. The most contentious issue revolves around the Women’s Reform Commission, formed later than others, which has recommended changes to Islamic inheritance laws to grant women greater rights. This has sparked widespread protests from Islamist parties.
Addressing the Awami League issue, Dr. Yunus revealed that the Election Commission suspended the party’s registration on May 12, barring it from participating in the upcoming election.
