National Election to Be Held Between December and June, Says Environment Adviser

Dhaka, May 23, 2025: Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Adviser to the Interim Government’s Ministry of Environment, Forest, Climate Change, and Water Resources, announced that the upcoming national parliamentary election will take place between December 2025 and June 2026.

She made this statement on Friday during a press interaction following the 24th National Conference and Annual General Meeting of the Bangladesh Zoological Society at the Nawab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of Dhaka University.

She stated, “There is no scope to go beyond this timeframe. The Chief Adviser and the Advisory Council are working towards this goal.” She further clarified that the interim government is tasked with three key responsibilities: reforms, justice, and elections.
Addressing queries about Dr. Yunus’s resignation, Rizwana Hasan said that details on the matter should be sought directly from the Chief Adviser. On the topic of pressure, she remarked, “The only pressure we face is the expectation to perform. There is no other pressure beyond that.” She also highlighted logistical issues like road blockages in Dhaka, which she believes can be resolved through dialogue.
The adviser revealed that agreements have been signed with the World Bank and ADB to address pollution in four of Dhaka’s rivers, with the cleanup of the Turag River set to begin first. Additionally, she assured the withdrawal of cases filed by the Forest Department against the Garo community in Madhupur, Tangail, and promised to resolve their land-related issues. Boundary demarcation work in Madhupur will commence on May 24.
