Dhaka, May 9, 2025 :Dhaka Metropolitan Police have arrested Faria Haque Tina, a student of the English Department at the University of Scholars, in connection with the murder of Jahidul Islam Parvez, a student of Primeasia University. The arrest was confirmed by Md. Rasel Sarwar, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Banani Police Station, who stated that Tina was apprehended in the Bashundhara Residential Area of the capital.
The incident, which occurred on April 19, 2025, stemmed from a dispute among students at Primeasia University’s campus in Banani. According to eyewitnesses, Parvez was eating snacks with friends near the campus when a misunderstanding arose with two female students from the University of Scholars, who were accompanied by students from the English and International Hospitality Management departments. The female students alleged that Parvez had harassed them, prompting them to report the matter to the university’s proctor.
In the proctor’s office, Parvez clarified that he was merely joking with his friends and had not harassed anyone. He was asked to apologize to the female students, which he did. However, tensions escalated after the meeting, with students from the English Department allegedly threatening Parvez. As he left the proctor’s office, a group of outsiders attacked him, stabbing him in the chest with a sharp object before fleeing. Parvez was rushed to Kurmitola General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
A case was filed by Parvez’s cousin, Humayun Kabir, naming eight individuals, including two leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, along with 25-30 unidentified persons. The named accused include Meheraj Islam (20), Abu Zar Gifari Piyas (20), Mahathir Hasan (20), Sobhan Niaz Tushar (24), Hridoy Miaji (23), Rifat (21), Ali (21), and Fahim (22).
Prior to Tina’s arrest, police had detained several suspects. On April 23, Meheraj, a prime suspect, was arrested in Gaibandha, while Hridoy Miaji was apprehended on April 21 in Monairkandi village, Titas Upazila, Cumilla, by RAB. Additionally, Mahathir Hasan and Md. Al Kamal Sheikh were arrested and gave confessional statements in court; they are currently in jail. Two others, Alvi Hossain Junayed and Al Amin Sani, were also arrested and are in custody following their remand.
With Faria Haque Tina’s arrest, the total number of detainees in the case has reached seven. On April 23, a court had ordered the police to locate two female students linked to the case, one of whom is Tina. The investigation continues as authorities seek to uncover further details surrounding the tragic incident.
