Dhaka, 26 May, 2025 : Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of the interim government, is set to embark on a four-day visit to Japan on May 27. During this visit, Bangladesh will sign seven agreements and memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with Japan. This was announced by Acting Foreign Secretary Ruhul Alam Siddique during a press conference on Monday, May 26.
Dr. Yunus will participate in the Nikkei Forum conference in Tokyo from May 29 to 30. The agreements cover areas such as human resources, energy, Official Development Assistance (ODA), BMET, economic zones, and trade-related matters. Sources from the Foreign Ministry indicate that Japan may raise objections to Dhaka’s “One China” policy during bilateral discussions.
The Chief Adviser will propose a one-billion-dollar low-interest loan assistance from Japan. Additionally, Dr. Yunus will be conferred an honorary doctorate by Soka University in Japan. Accompanying him on the visit will be Foreign Adviser Md. Touhid Hossain and Special Envoy for International Affairs Lutfe Siddiqui. A bilateral meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba is likely on May 30.
A Foreign Ministry official stated that discussions from the sixth FOC meeting held in Tokyo on May 15 will be further elaborated during this visit, with a focus on strengthening bilateral ties and addressing regional issues.
Since assuming office in August last year, Dr. Yunus has attended the UN General Assembly, COP-29, the D-8 Summit, the World Economic Forum in Davos, and visited China, Thailand, Qatar, and Vatican City. This visit marks his latest international engagement in Japan.
