Storm Warning Issued for Seven Regions with Winds Up to 60 km/h

 

Staff Reporter, May 22, 2025 : The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has issued a cautionary alert for river ports in seven regions of the country, warning of potential storms with wind speeds of up to 60 kilometers per hour.  

In its evening forecast for inland river ports on Thursday (May 22), the Meteorological Department stated that regions including Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Cumilla, Chattogram, and Cox’s Bazar may experience temporary rain or thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds blowing from the west/northwest at speeds of 45-60 km/h. These conditions are expected to occur by 1:00 AM.
Meteorologist Dr. Md. Omar Faruk stated that river ports in these areas have been instructed to display cautionary signal number 1 during this period.
In its morning forecast, the Meteorological Department noted that an extended low-pressure system stretches from West Bengal through southwestern Bangladesh to the northern Bay of Bengal. The southwest monsoon has advanced to Akyab in Myanmar and is likely to progress further under favorable conditions. A new low-pressure system may form over the southern Bay of Bengal by Monday (May 26).
The forecast also indicated that many areas in Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions, some areas in Dhaka and Rajshahi divisions, and isolated places in Khulna, Barishal, and Chattogram divisions may experience temporary gusty winds with light to moderate rain or thunderstorms. Additionally, moderate to heavy rainfall is possible in parts of Rangpur, Mymensingh, and Sylhet divisions.
Day and night temperatures across the country are expected to rise slightly. A mild heatwave is currently affecting Madaripur, Pabna, Khulna, Jashore, Chuadanga, Kushtia, and Satkhira districts and is likely to persist.
