Dhaka, May 27, 2025 – The New Market Police Station has arrested three individuals in connection with the harassment of a female Dhaka University student at Chandni Chowk Market, charging them with attempted murder and other related offenses. The case also names five market traders and approximately 50 unidentified individuals as accused.
Assistant Police Commissioner of the New Market Zone, Tariq Latif, stated that alongside the arrests, efforts are underway to swiftly bring the remaining involved parties to justice.
The incident occurred around 10 PM on Monday when a dispute over bargaining escalated between the female student and shopkeepers. Allegations of harassment surfaced, prompting the student’s peers to rush to the scene. In response, traders allegedly formed a mob and attacked the students, resulting in serious injuries to two students who were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Additionally, 10 to 12 others sustained injuries.
The police have launched an investigation and assured strict action against those responsible.
