Trawler Carrying 39 Passengers Sinks in Meghna River, 19 Missing

 

31 May, 2025 : In a tragic incident, a trawler carrying 39 passengers sank in the Meghna River in Hatiya, Noakhali, on Saturday (May 31, 2025) around 3:00 PM while traveling from Bhasan Char to Noakhali. With the assistance of local fishermen, 20 passengers have been rescued alive, but 19 others remain missing.

According to reports, the trawler departed from Bhasan Char around 2:00 PM, carrying 39 passengers, including four police officers, Rohingya patients, Ansar members, and personnel from various NGOs, heading toward Ali Bazar Ghat in Harani Union. Approximately 7-8 kilometers from Bhasan Char, near Karim Bazar in the Dubar Char area of the Meghna River, the trawler encountered rough weather and high waves, causing it to collide with a shoal and sink.
Eyewitnesses reported that the trawler was carrying 39 passengers when it was caught in stormy weather and high waves, leading to the collision and subsequent sinking. With the help of three local boats from Hatiya’s Chanandi Union, 20 passengers were rescued alive. However, 19 passengers remain unaccounted for, and local fishermen have promptly joined the rescue efforts.
Hatiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) AKM Azmal Huda confirmed that the trawler was carrying 39 passengers, of whom 20 have been rescued. Among the missing are two police officers. The Coast Guard is currently conducting operations to locate and rescue the remaining 19 Passengers.
