Dhaka, May 26, 2025: Hundreds of government officials and employees staged a protest inside the Bangladesh Secretariat today, expressing strong opposition to the recently issued Government Service (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025. The ordinance, promulgated by the President on Sunday evening (May 25), allows the dismissal of government employees for four types of disciplinary violations with only a show-cause notice, bypassing departmental proceedings.
The protesters, representing various ministries and departments, gathered at the main gate of the Secretariat around 12:30 PM, halting their work to join the demonstration. Chanting slogans such as “The fire is lit, the blood is burning,” “Cancel the illegal black law,” “Employees won’t accept the illegal black law,” and “Unite and fight, 18 lakh employees,” they demanded the immediate withdrawal of the ordinance. The main gate was closed during the protest, disrupting vehicle movement in and out of the Secretariat for approximately 30 minutes.
The agitation began after the ordinance’s draft was approved in an advisory council meeting on May 22. Since then, Secretariat employees have been staging protests, with demonstrations intensifying following the ordinance’s issuance. On Sunday, all employee organizations collectively protested, vowing to continue their movement until the ordinance is repealed.
According to ministry sources, a scheduled meeting with the law adviser at 2:00 PM today to address the protesters’ demands did not take place, as the adviser reportedly did not visit the Secretariat.
The employees’ unified stance and ongoing protests highlight their firm opposition to what they term an “illegal black law,” signaling potential escalation if their demands remain unmet.
