BNP Leader Files Case Against Jatiya Party Chairman GM Quader in Lalmonirhat

Lalmonirhat, June 2, 2025: A case has been filed against Jatiya Party Chairman and former minister GM Quader, his wife Sherifa Quader, and 17 others, along with 20-30 unidentified individuals, for allegedly assaulting and attempting to murder a BNP polling agent during the 2018 national election. The complaint was lodged by Khalilur Rahman, a senior vice-president of the BNP’s Ward No. 5 unit in Lalmonirhat Pourashava, at Lalmonirhat Sadar Police Station on Monday, June 2, 2025, over seven years after the incident.
According to the case filed by Khalilur Rahman, a resident of Sadhutari village, the incident occurred on December 30, 2018, during the national election at the Nesarisa Kamil Madrasa polling center, where he was serving as a polling agent for the BNP. The complaint alleges that on the evening of December 29, 2018, several individuals visited Khalilur’s home, threatening his family and warning him against going to the polling station, stating he would “return as a corpse” if he did. Despite the threats, Khalilur went to the polling center to perform his duties. Around 11:30 AM on election day, at the direction of GM Quader and Sherifa Quader, several individuals allegedly dragged him out of the polling station, assaulted him, and verbally abused him. He was later rescued by locals and given first aid.
The complainant stated that he attempted to file a case at the time but was unable to do so due to fear of reprisal from what he described as the “fascist Awami League government” and its allies, including the Jatiya Party. Khalilur further alleged that GM Quader, as Jatiya Party Chairman, collaborated with the Awami League to secure the opposition’s seat in parliament, thereby legitimizing what he called a “fascist regime.” He claimed the assault was a deliberate attempt to intimidate and remove him from the polling station.

Lalmonirhat Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Nurnabi confirmed that the case has been recorded under charges of assault, causing grievous hurt, attempted murder, threats, and issuing orders for the crime. “The investigation is ongoing, and efforts are underway to arrest the accused,” he said.

The case, filed more than seven years after the alleged incident, has sparked attention due to its political implications, with the BNP accusing the Jatiya Party of electoral misconduct. Further developments are awaited as the investigation progresses.
