Dhaka, June 02, 2025 : Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, a member of the BNP Standing Committee, has opined that the proposed budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year should have been smaller in size. He believes the budget largely follows the continuity of the previous government and its implementation will not be easy for the interim government.
Speaking on Monday (June 2) afternoon while reacting to the budget, he said, “The budget size should have been smaller. Qualitatively, there is little change in this budget; only minor numerical adjustments have been made.”
Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed presented the proposed budget of BDT 7,89,999 crore on Monday at 3:00 PM. This is the 54th national budget of Bangladesh and the first under the interim government. Compared to the previous fiscal year, the budget size has been reduced by approximately BDT 7,000 crore, marking the first time in post-independence history that a budget is smaller than the previous year’s.
Dr. Salehuddin stated that the budget size was reduced considering the ground realities, with controlling the deficit being a major challenge. As there is no parliament, the budget speech was broadcast on Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar. The last time a budget was presented outside parliament was in 2008 under the military-backed caretaker government.
The Finance Adviser emphasized that the reform-oriented budget aims to establish a sustainable system and ensure the benefits of development reach everyone.
