Flood Situation Likely to Worsen in Sylhet, Sunamganj, and Moulvibazar

Sylhet, June 3, 2025: The water levels of at least five rivers in the Sylhet division are rising, raising concerns of a worsening flood situation in Sylhet, Sunamganj, and Moulvibazar districts. This information was provided in a forecast issued by the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre of the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) on Tuesday, June 3.

According to the forecast, the Surma and Kushiyara rivers in Sylhet district and the Manu river in Moulvibazar district are currently flowing above the danger level. Over the next 48 hours, the water levels of the Surma and Kushiyara rivers are expected to rise further and may continue to flow above the danger level. Additionally, the water levels of the Sarigowain and Jadukata rivers may also increase and could exceed the danger level. However, the water levels of the Manu, Khowai, Someshwari, and Dhalai rivers in Moulvibazar, Habiganj, and Netrokona districts are likely to decrease. During this period, the flood situation in the low-lying areas adjacent to major rivers in Sylhet, Sunamganj, and Moulvibazar may deteriorate slightly.
Meanwhile, the water levels of the Brahmaputra and Jamuna rivers are rising and may continue to do so for the next two days, though they are expected to remain below the danger level. From the third day, the water levels of these rivers may stabilize, with a potential decrease on the fourth and fifth days.
In the Rangpur division, the water levels of the Teesta, Dharla, and Dudhkumar rivers are expected to decrease over the next 24 hours but may rise again in the following two days. The Teesta river may flow at the warning level. In the Chattogram division, the water levels of the Muhuri, Feni, Halda, Sangu, and Matamuhuri rivers are likely to decrease over the next three days and remain below the danger level. The Ganges river’s water level is stable, while the Padma river’s water level is rising and may continue to do so for the next five days, though both are expected to remain below the danger level.
The strong flow of water has caused significant damage, with many homes collapsing alongside breached embankments, heightening concerns among local residents. The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre stated that the local administration is taking comprehensive measures to address the situation.
