03 June 2025 : UNICEF and Save the Children have announced the indefinite closure of all educational institutions in the Rohingya refugee camps in Ukhiya and Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar. The decision was conveyed in a letter sent to the Cox’s Bazar Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner on Tuesday (June 3, 2025) afternoon. Signed by UNICEF Cox’s Bazar Field Office Chief Angela Kearney and Save the Children’s Mohammad Golam Mostafa, the letter stated that education activities have been suspended due to the situation in Ukhiya.
Indefinite Closure of Educational Institutions in Rohingya Camps
UNICEF previously reported on Monday (June 2) that a funding crisis has jeopardized the education of 230,000 Rohingya children. Consequently, 1,200 local volunteer teachers have been laid off, leading to prolonged protests. Shamsud Douza Nayan, Additional Commissioner of the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Office, confirmed the receipt of the letter and noted that requests have been made to the United Nations to reinstate the teachers and resolve the funding issue.
On Tuesday morning, sacked teachers from the 33 Rohingya camps in Ukhiya and Teknaf blocked the Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf highway, disrupting traffic and causing inconvenience to commuters. The protest was called off after assurances from the Ukhiya Upazila Executive Officer. The teachers alleged that 1,250 Bangladeshi teachers were dismissed from NGOs, including BRAC, CODEC, Friendship, Mukti Cox’s Bazar, and JCF, while Rohingya volunteers were retained, citing UNICEF’s funding shortage.
