Sylhet, June 01, 2025: A devastating landslide triggered by continuous heavy rainfall in Golapganj Upazila, Sylhet, has left four members of a family trapped under debris. The incident occurred around 4:00 AM on Sunday (June 01) in Bakhatiar Ghat, Lakshnaband Union No. 7, near the Alvina Pineapple Garden. The identities of the victims have not yet been confirmed.
Khalkur Rahman, Chairman of Lakshnaband Union No. 7, confirmed the incident, stating, “A landslide caused by heavy rain buried four people under the debris of a house. We’ve been trying to rescue them locally for two hours, but the risky conditions have halted progress. No assistance from the administration or fire service has arrived yet.” He added that although the heads of three victims were briefly uncovered, further soil collapse buried them again, and their survival seems unlikely.
Local residents reported that the landslide occurred around 3:00 AM on Saturday night due to relentless rain. The house, located at the base of an old hill, was engulfed by the collapsing soil. Hearing screams, locals attempted to clear the debris but were unsuccessful. The fire service was informed, but they had not reached the site by 4:00 AM.
Golapganj Model Thana’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Moniruzzaman Molla told reporters, “Due to continuous rain and fallen trees blocking roads, reaching the site is challenging. We are trying to access the area via alternative routes.” The Fire Service’s Taltola Control Room confirmed that two units arrived at the site around 4:00 AM to begin rescue operations.
The tragedy has cast a pall of grief over the local community. Rescue efforts are ongoing with the combined efforts of the administration, fire service, army, and local residents.
