Rising Water Levels in Teesta River, 44 Sluice Gates Opened

Patgram (Lalmonirhat), June 1, 2025: Due to incessant rainfall and flash floods from upstream, the water level of the Teesta River has been rising, prompting authorities to open all 44 sluice gates of the Teesta Barrage to manage the flow. As of 9 AM on Sunday, June 1, the water level was recorded at 51.86 meters (auto gauge), just 30 centimeters below the danger level of 52.15 meters.

Local residents report growing concerns about potential flooding, particularly in the Dahagram Union of Patgram Upazila, where thousands living along the riverbank are at risk. The Teesta River is surrounded by 76 chars (riverine islands), where most homes are situated in low-lying areas, making them highly vulnerable to flooding.
Sakibul Islam, a resident of the Guchchhagram area in Dahagram, expressed his fears, stating, “When floods come, everything is destroyed—crops, livestock, household belongings. We’re scared this time too.”
According to Nurul Islam, a water gauge operator at the Dalia Water Development Board, the water level in the Teesta has been rising steadily over the past few days. Efforts are underway to control the water flow by opening all 44 gates of the barrage. While the Water Development Board claims there is no immediate threat of flooding, anxiety persists among the local population.
