ACC Faces Extortion Allegations, Investigation Promised

June 26, 2025: Hasnat Abdullah, the chief organizer of the southern region of the National Conference of Professionals (NCP), has raised serious allegations of extortion in the name of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) through a verified Facebook post. He claimed that an individual identifying himself as Aktar Hossain, the Director General (DG) of the ACC, demanded 1 lakh taka from NCP leader Dr. Mahmuda Mitu to secure a "clearance" from corruption allegations. Hasnat stated that this demand was framed as the ACC’s “tea bill,” and Mitu was threatened with consequences if she refused to comply.
ACC Director General Aktar Hossain responded, stating that Mitu had fallen victim to a fraudulent syndicate. He revealed that four General Diaries (GDs) have been filed regarding similar demands from the same phone number. Hossain assured that a thorough investigation has been initiated, and if any ACC official is found involved, they will face the strictest legal action, similar to other fraudsters.
In his post, Hasnat alleged that such practices by the ACC are not new. He claimed that during former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s tenure, the ACC harassed opposition leaders, including Khaleda Zia, while remaining silent on Awami League’s corruption. Hasnat had hoped for reforms in the ACC following August 5, but instead, the commission has allegedly resorted to demanding money as a “tea bill.” He praised Mitu for recording a video of the incident and refusing to pay the bribe, but expressed concern about how many ordinary citizens might have been coerced into complying with such demands.
Hasnat emphasized that any corruption allegations should be made public and addressed through legal channels, rather than extorting innocent people. He questioned why the ACC is resorting to threats and extortion. Demanding justice for the ACC’s alleged misconduct, he warned that if the bureaucracy’s “venomous fangs” are not curbed, the dream of a new Bangladesh will be at risk. He further questioned whether the sacrifices made by the people in July were merely to enable bureaucrats to demand 1 lakh taka for “tea.”
