Bangladesh Police Officer and Two Awami League Leaders Detained in India

Kolkata, June 6, 2025: A senior Bangladesh Police officer, holding the rank of Superintendent of Police (SP), along with two Awami League leaders, were detained in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district. The detentions took place on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, in the Basudebpur Mor area of Ward No. 26, Bhatpara Municipality, following a police operation by Jagaddal Thana police.

The detained individuals were identified as Khyarul Islam Jewel, Joint General Secretary of the Swecchasebak League, Ashrafur Rahman, an Awami League leader, and Hasan Arafat Abid, a fugitive police SP. According to local sources, the trio had been residing in the house of a person named Titas Mondal for the past five months. Acting on a tip-off, the police conducted a raid and detained the three individuals.
Aniruddha Biswas, a student at Jadavpur University and a paying guest at Mondal’s residence, stated that the detained individuals were known to Mondal and had entered India with valid passports and visas. Biswas claimed that they sought refuge in India due to fears for their lives amid the current political situation in Bangladesh. He also mentioned that they had received medical treatment during their stay.
Local residents reported that this was not the first instance of Bangladeshi nationals staying at Mondal’s house, as similar activities had been observed in the past. Two days prior to the detentions, local councillor and Trinamool Congress leader Arun Brahma had visited the house after receiving information about such movements.
According to Kolkata Police sources, during interrogation, the detained individuals identified themselves as Ashrafur Rahman, Khyarul Hasan Jewel, and Asan Arafat Abid. Preliminary investigations confirmed that all three possessed valid passports and Indian visas. Subsequently, they were released.
