Gaibandha, June 7, 2025: A BNP leader named Elias Mia (40) was killed in an attack by miscreants in Gaibandha’s Sundarganj. He was the joint general secretary of the Sarbananda Union BNP convening committee. Elias succumbed to his injuries on Saturday (June 7) at around 4:00 PM while undergoing treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital. The officer-in-charge (OC) of Sundarganj Police Station, Abdul Hakim Azad, confirmed the incident on Saturday night.
BNP Leader Killed in Attack by Miscreants in Gaibandha
Elias Mia was a resident of Rambhadra Khanabari area in Sundarganj and the son of the late Abdul Bepari. According to local sources, on Friday (June 6) at around 11:30 PM, Elias was returning from a fish farm near his home when miscreants, lying in wait at Gandar Bil Khanabari, attacked him with iron rods. Hearing his screams, locals rushed to the scene, prompting the attackers to flee.
Critically injured, Elias was first taken to Sundarganj Upazila Health Complex. As his condition deteriorated, he was transferred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital that same night, where he passed away on Saturday afternoon.
A video recorded while Elias was being taken to the hospital has gone viral on social media. In the video, responding to a question, Elias claimed that four individuals, including Sumon, a Youth League activist and son of Mazibar, Yubair, son of Dakua, and the son of Taleb, beat him with iron rods approximately 200 times.
Sundarganj Police Station OC Abdul Hakim Azad said, “The exact cause of the incident is still unknown. We will know more once we receive a written complaint from the victim’s family. The police are working to arrest those involved and uncover the details of the incident.” He added that the body will be handed over to the family on Sunday after an autopsy. Additional police and army personnel have been deployed in and around the incident site.
On Saturday at around 9:45 PM, law enforcement personnel surrounded the house of Sumon, the Youth League activist named in Elias’s video.
