BNP to Decide on Proposal Limiting Prime Minister’s Tenure to 10 Years After Party Discussions

Dhaka, June 22, 2025: The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will hold internal discussions to decide on a proposal limiting an individual’s tenure as Prime Minister to a maximum of 10 years. This was announced by BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed on Sunday, following the fifth day of the second phase of dialogues held by the National Consensus Commission at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital.
Salahuddin stated, “On the question of the Constitution’s core principles, BNP seeks to revert to the Fifth Amendment. If reinstated, we have no objection to including equality, human dignity, democracy, and social justice in the Constitution.”
He further remarked, “I won’t speculate on the outcome of the National Consensus Commission. However, if political parties fail to unite, it will be disappointing for the nation.” He emphasized the need for consensus on at least minimum issues, noting that agreement on many matters remains elusive.
Earlier in the day, during the Commission’s dialogue, Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, Vice-Amir of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, proposed that no individual should serve as Prime Minister for more than 10 years in their lifetime. He described the proposal as a positive precedent for future politics. According to him, all parties except three expressed agreement with the proposal.
