Brahmanbaria, June 14, 2025: A cargo-laden bulkhead sank in the Meghna River after colliding with a pillar of the Ashuganj-Bhairab second rail bridge in Brahmanbaria’s Ashuganj early Saturday morning. No casualties or missing persons were reported in the incident.
According to Md. Rasheduzzaman, Officer-in-Charge of Bhairab Naval Police, the bulkhead, named MV Rifat Islam, was carrying stones from Sylhet to Dhaka when it struck the bridge’s second pillar at dawn. The collision caused the vessel to break in half and sink shortly afterward.
Local sources informed the police that the bulkhead was navigating the Meghna River when the accident occurred. Naval police responded promptly, rushing to the scene. Members of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) are currently working to salvage the sunken vessel.
Authorities confirmed that no one was injured or missing, and efforts to recover the bulkhead are ongoing.
