International Desk, June 14, 2025 : Elon Musk has announced that his satellite-based internet service, Starlink, is now operational in Iran. The announcement comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and Israel following attacks and counterattacks. According to Musk, approximately 100 Starlink terminals are active in Iran, playing a crucial role in maintaining information flow.
Following Israel’s attack on Friday (June 13), internet services in Iran were significantly restricted. In this context, Starlink has emerged as a vital tool, enabling Iranians to bypass government controls and communicate online, thereby facilitating political and social discussions.
The Iranian government has expressed concerns that Starlink could fuel anti-government movements. However, Musk clarified on Twitter that the “signal remains active,” indicating that Starlink is fully functional.
In 2022, during widespread protests in Iran following Mahsa Amini’s death, the government restricted information flow. At that time, the United States granted Musk special permission to deploy Starlink to ensure access to information. Similarly, during the Ukraine war, Musk provided Starlink services free of charge, significantly aiding the country’s defense efforts.
Experts believe Starlink has strengthened freedom of information and opportunities for protest. However, some fear it could interfere with Iran’s sovereignty.
