Cumilla, June 19, 2025: A court in Cumilla has sentenced Taslima Akter, a housewife, to life imprisonment for killing her father-in-law, Md. Chan Mia, after he objected to her extramarital affairs. The verdict was delivered by Judge Mosammat Farida Yasmin of the Additional District and Sessions Judge’s Fifth Court on Thursday afternoon.
According to the prosecution lawyer, Md. Belal Hossain Bhuiyan, Taslima’s husband, Md. Bilal Hossain, lived in Dhaka for work, allowing Taslima to engage in multiple extramarital relationships. When her father-in-law, Chan Mia, protested, an enraged Taslima murdered him on the night of July 11, 2014, by cutting his private parts and stabbing him while he was asleep. After the murder, she bathed and informed Chan Mia’s daughter, Baby Akter, about the incident. The next day, accompanied by Baby Akter, Taslima surrendered at Laksam Police Station.
Following the testimony of 12 witnesses, the court sentenced Taslima Akter to life imprisonment, imposed a fine of 50,000 taka, and an additional six months in prison if the fine remains unpaid.
