Dhaka has secured the second position on the list of cities with the most polluted air worldwide on Sunday, June 22, 2025. The city recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) score of 167 in the morning, categorized as ‘unhealthy’ for residents.
Topping the list is Chad with an AQI score of 176, followed by Pakistan in third place with a score of 164. The Democratic Republic of Congo ranks fourth with an AQI of 153, while India holds the fifth position with a score of 138.
The AQI is a daily measure that informs the public about the level of air pollution in a specific city and highlights potential health risks. An AQI score between 101 and 150 is considered ‘unhealthy for sensitive groups,’ while a score between 151 and 200 is deemed ‘unhealthy’ for the general population. Scores ranging from 201 to 300 are classified as ‘very unhealthy,’ and an AQI above 301 is labeled ‘hazardous,’ posing severe health risks to residents.
