Dhaka, June 23, 2025: After being locked for 40 consecutive days, the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) headquarters, Nagar Bhavan, finally resumed operations on Monday morning. DSCC officials and employees returned to work, marking a gradual return to normalcy.
While the presence of staff increased at Nagar Bhavan, several offices, including that of DSCC Administrator Shahjahan Mia and some engineers, remained locked. BNP leader Ishraq Hossain told journalists that the Shramik Dal assisted in unlocking the building. He noted that the protesters scaled back their demonstrations to avoid inconveniencing citizens, allowing civic services to resume. DSCC’s regional offices have also restarted operations.
Citizens flocked to Nagar Bhavan for essential services like birth and death registrations, though some complained that full-scale services are yet to resume. A security guard at the main gate confirmed that instructions were received to reopen the building, adding, “Officials are returning, and normalcy is gradually being restored.”
A DSCC official stated that while the protests are ongoing, the demonstrators have softened their stance to reduce public inconvenience, prompting the reopening of Nagar Bhavan. However, offices of the engineering department and the administrator’s office remained locked. Reports indicate that DSCC’s eight regional offices also resumed normal activities, though engineers did not report to work there either.
The lockdown began on May 15 following protests by supporters of BNP leader Ishraq Hossain, demanding his immediate swearing-in as mayor. On Sunday, protest coordinator and former secretary Mashiur Rahman called on DSCC staff to return to work, leading to the resumption of operations on Monday.
