London, June 13, 2025 – Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of the interim government, has announced that elections could be held as early as the week before Ramadan in 2026, provided all preparations are completed. The statement came following a meeting with Tarique Rahman, Acting Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), in London on Friday, June 13, 2025.
According to a press release from the interim government’s press wing, Dr. Yunus emphasized that the election could take place in the first half of April 2026 if sufficient progress is made in implementing necessary reforms and ensuring justice. The meeting, held at The Dorchester Hotel in London at 2:00 PM Bangladesh time, was attended by key figures, including National Security Adviser Dr. Khalilur Rahman and Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam, who welcomed Tarique Rahman upon his arrival.
BNP Media Cell member Shairul Kabir, quoting convener Mawdud Hossain Alamgir Pavel, noted that Tarique Rahman was accompanied by Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, a member of BNP’s Standing Committee and Chairperson’s Foreign Affairs Advisory Committee, and Humayun Kabir, International Affairs Adviser to the Acting Chairman, during the visit.
The discussion also highlighted Tarique Rahman’s proposal for holding elections before Ramadan and other gestures, including delivering his mother’s greetings to Dr. Yunus and presenting him with a gift.
