In Bakerganj upazila of Barishal, police have arrested a father, Mostafa Hawladar (40), and his son, Shafikul Islam (15), in connection with the brutal murder of a housewife, Asma Begum (55), stemming from a long-standing land dispute. The arrests were made on Sunday (June 22) around 7 PM from the Kalskathi Union. The investigating officer of the murder case, Sub-Inspector (SI) Rafiqul Islam of Bakerganj Police Station, confirmed the arrests.
Asma Begum, wife of Abul Hossain from Kalskathi village, was killed on June 17. According to police sources, a land dispute between Asma’s husband, Abul Hossain, and the accused, Mostafa Hawladar, led to the incident. On the evening of June 17, during the Magrib prayer time, the accused found Asma alone at home, attacked her with sharp weapons, and left her in a pool of blood. Her family members were away at the time.
Asma’s relatives stated that she had called her husband, pleading for him to see her one last time. Upon returning home, Abul Hossain found his wife’s bloodied body. With the help of locals, she was rushed to Bakerganj Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared her dead.
On June 18, Asma’s son, Asim Billah, filed a murder case at Bakerganj Police Station. The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the station, Abul Kalam Azad, said that within five days of the case being filed, the two suspects were apprehended. During initial interrogation, they confessed to their involvement in the murder. The accused were sent to court on Monday morning.
