Feni, June 18, 2025: The government has decided to withdraw 223 political cases filed against leaders and activists of opposition parties, including BNP and Jamaat, during the Awami League regime in Feni district. Most of these cases were filed under the Explosives Substances Act and the Special Powers Act.
On Tuesday (June 17) night, Feni District Public Prosecutor (PP) Mezbah Uddin Khan confirmed this development. He stated that, as per instructions from the Public Security Division of the Home Ministry, the government has decided not to proceed with the prosecution of these cases under Section 494 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898. Necessary legal steps are being taken accordingly.
Advocate Mezbah Uddin Bhuiyan, Member Secretary of Feni Poura BNP, said that around three to four thousand leaders and activists were implicated in these cases, many of whom have already served jail terms. He demanded the swift withdrawal of the remaining cases.
PP Mezbah Uddin Khan further noted that these cases were filed between January 2009 and July 2024, with a significant number of false and harassing cases lodged particularly around the national elections of 2014, 2018, and 2024. Out of 456 cases proposed for withdrawal, 223 have been finalized for withdrawal so far.
Welcoming the decision, Feni District BNP Member Secretary Alal Uddin Alal said, “For years, thousands of our leaders and activists have faced harassment and torture due to false cases. I myself have faced 65-70 cases and been imprisoned multiple times. This initiative brings hope for a democratic state.”
The decision is expected to alleviate some of the long-standing harassment and social adversities faced by the affected leaders and activists.
