Dhaka, June 23, 2025: Hanif Mia, Member Secretary of the Uttara West Thana Volunteer League, has been detained in connection with the harassment and physical assault of former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda. Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) Uttara Division, Mahidul Islam, confirmed the detention to Dhaka Post.
On Sunday, Nurul Huda was arrested in Uttara, Dhaka, when a mob attacked and physically harassed him. A video of the incident went viral on Facebook, sparking widespread criticism. Police have identified all individuals involved, and operations to arrest them are ongoing.
A General Diary (GD) was filed at Uttara West Thana on Monday night. For security reasons, Nurul Huda was taken to the Detective Branch (DB) office. DC Mahidul Islam stated, “A military team detained Hanif Mia. Operations to apprehend others involved are continuing.”
Home Affairs Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury called the incident undesirable and issued directives to prevent recurrence. Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan and BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi condemned the incident. BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed stated that disciplinary action would be taken against any party member found involved.
