Import and export activities at Sonamasjid, the country’s second-largest land port, have come to a complete standstill due to a “complete shutdown” program called by the NBR Reform Unity Council. No goods were imported or exported throughout Saturday, June 28. Nurul Hasan, Assistant Revenue Officer at Sonamasjid Land Port Customs, stated that the shutdown will continue on Sunday if the government does not meet their demands.
According to port sources, approximately 16 vehicles loaded with goods such as yarn, plastic, and food items, intended for export, are stranded at the Bangladesh side of the Sonamasjid port. Meanwhile, around 300 trucks carrying import goods are waiting at India’s Mahadipur land port to enter Bangladesh. The closure has resulted in an estimated daily revenue loss of approximately BDT 3 crore for the government.
Nurul Hasan further noted, “The shutdown was observed throughout Saturday. It has been announced from the central authority that the program will continue tomorrow. If the government does not address our demands, we will continue this peaceful movement.”
The disruption has caused concern among traders, who have urged authorities to resolve the issue promptly.
