Iran’s Parliament Approves Closure of Strait of Hormuz

Iran’s parliament on Sunday passed a resolution approving the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global trade route, in response to U.S. strikes on its nuclear facilities, state-run media reported.

The Strait of Hormuz facilitates the transport of approximately 20% of the world’s oil and gas supply. Major oil exporters, including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, rely on this waterway to reach open seas. Its closure could disrupt global energy supplies, potentially spiking oil prices and hindering U.S. warships’ exit from the Persian Gulf.
Iran’s Supreme National Security Council will decide whether to implement the resolution. Revolutionary Guard Commander Ismail Kosari stated that closing the strait is on the agenda and will be enforced if necessary.
The decision follows the U.S. military’s “Operation Midnight Hammer,” which targeted Iran’s nuclear facilities. U.S. General Dan Cain claimed the operation destroyed three key Iranian nuclear sites, with U.S. stealth bombers maintaining complete secrecy, preventing any Iranian counteraction.
