Newborn Rescued, Woman Detained in Sherpur Hospital Theft Case

In a swift operation, Sherpur police rescued a newborn baby girl stolen from a private hospital in Sherpur town within eight hours of the incident. The suspect, identified as Chandni Begum (30), was detained during the operation in the Kurua Kazipara area of Sreebordi Upazila on Saturday evening (June 28) around 6:00 PM.

According to the newborn’s family and local sources, the baby was born via cesarean section to Abeda Begum, wife of Firoz Mia from Chapatli, Sherpur, at United Hospital last Wednesday. The family was set to be discharged on Saturday. However, while Abeda Begum briefly stepped away to the restroom on Saturday morning, Chandni Begum, dressed in a black burqa, allegedly abducted the newborn from the hospital cabin. The incident sparked outrage, drawing a crowd of relatives and locals to the hospital. Following the theft, police launched an immediate operation. With the assistance of local residents, the newborn was traced to the home of Chan Mia in Kurua Kazipara, where Chandni Begum, identified as Chan Mia’s daughter, was apprehended. The baby was safely reunited with her overjoyed parents, Firoz Mia and Abeda Begum, who expressed gratitude to the police and all involved. Sherpur Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Zubaydul Alam confirmed that the police acted promptly, using CCTV footage to identify the suspect. “After the incident, we launched an operation and successfully rescued the newborn while detaining the accused woman from Kurua Kazipara,” he said. Legal proceedings against Chandni Begum are underway.
