A sudden grid failure disrupted power supply across several parts of Dhaka, including most residential halls of Dhaka University, plunging the campus into darkness on Sunday night. The outage, which began after 10:00 PM, affected the majority of the university’s halls and other campus areas, sparking frustration among students.
Initially perceived as routine load-shedding, the prolonged absence of electricity led to agitation among students, with reports of protests and shouting in the hall areas. However, power supply remained unaffected in Shahid Sergeant Zahurul Haque Hall, Sufia Kamal Hall, Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall, and the Mall Chattar area.
The outage stemmed from a technical fault at a Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB) substation in Rampura, which occurred around 10:00 PM. Areas under the Dhaka Power Distribution Company (DPDC), including Rampura, Hatirjheel, Farmgate, Banani, Gulshan, and Mogbazar, were primarily affected, while areas under DESCO experienced minimal disruption.
Shamim Hasan, spokesperson for the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB), confirmed that PGCB engineers are working tirelessly to restore power. “The issue originated at PGCB’s Rampura substation. We expect the situation to normalize within 30 minutes to an hour, potentially by bypassing the fault if necessary,” Hasan stated.
In an official statement, PGCB reported that the disruption occurred at the Rampura 230/132 kV grid substation at 9:50 PM due to an unexpected technical issue. Engineers are actively working to resolve the problem, with hopes of restoring power as quickly as possible.
