The United States has requested China to pressure Iran to keep the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime route for oil transportation, open. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that if Iran closes the strait, China would be the most adversely affected, with other countries also facing significant consequences.
Speaking on CBS News’ Face the Nation on Sunday (June 22), Rubio said, “If Iran shuts down the Strait of Hormuz, the Chinese government should be the most upset because a large portion of their oil passes through it. If Iran places mines in the strait, China will have to pay a steep price, and so will other countries. We will also face some impact. A closure of the strait would have a massive impact on the entire world. For Iran, this would be commercial suicide.”
Rubio further claimed that the United States has the capability to take countermeasures if Iran attempts to close the Strait of Hormuz.
The Strait of Hormuz is a vital artery for global oil transportation. Its closure could severely disrupt the world economy, particularly impacting oil-importing nations.
