Robbery Incident Involving Corpse-Carrying Ambulance in Mirpur, Kushtia

 

Kushtia, June 27, 2025: A shocking robbery took place in the Kalitola-Durgapur area of Mirpur upazila, Kushtia, targeting an ambulance carrying a deceased person's body. The incident occurred around 2:00 AM on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, as confirmed by Mirpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mominul Islam.
According to reports, the ambulance was transporting the body of Ayesha Khatun (50), a resident of Sudhirajpur village in Poradah Union, Mirpur upazila, from Rajshahi Medical College Hospital to her home. Ayesha was the wife of Niyamat Ali. During the journey, a gang of robbers attacked the ambulance, assaulting the deceased’s relatives and looting Tk 32,600 in cash and gold ornaments, including a pair of earrings. Disturbingly, the robbers also searched the deceased’s body for valuables.
Among the victims were Rakibul Islam (42) from Nishchintapur village, Shahbul from Ailchara village, Shiyuli Khatun (46), and Ferdousi (32). Rakibul Islam, Ayesha’s brother and one of the passengers, recounted the ordeal: “While returning with my elder sister’s body, the robbers attacked the ambulance. They snatched Tk 32,600 and a pair of earrings from us. They even searched my sister’s ears and neck for valuables, threatening us with sharp weapons and assaulting us.”
The relatives reported that the ambulance was stopped near a field in the Kalitola-Durgapur area due to an obstruction on the road. Four to five robbers emerged from a nearby betel leaf garden, armed with sharp weapons. They took Tk 4,000 from the driver and looted cash and gold ornaments from the passengers. The robbers also checked the deceased’s body for any valuable items.
OC Mominul Islam told Kalbela that the incident occurred in a rural area, despite police patrols on the main road nearby. “The robbery took place around 2:00 AM in the Kalitola-Durgapur field area. Multiple police teams have begun investigating, and those involved will be brought to justice,” he assured.
