Dhaka, June 21, 2025: A meeting held at the Bhattara Police Station on Saturday afternoon to resolve the ongoing blockade and sit-in protests by United International University (UIU) students over the illegal expulsion of 26 students and their five-point demands ended without any resolution. The students have vowed to continue their movement.
The meeting, held from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM, was attended by senior officials of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, UIU faculty members, and student representatives. The university authorities requested the students to suspend their protests, promising to announce their decision by 10:00 AM tomorrow (June 22). However, the students demanded an immediate resolution to their demands, left the discussion table, and rejoined their peers protesting on the streets. As a result, no agreement was reached.
The meeting was attended by Nazrul Islam, DIG of the Crime Branch, Dhaka Metropolitan Police; Shahidullah, Additional DIG, Dhaka Metropolitan Police; Tarek Mahmud, Deputy Commissioner of Gulshan Division, Dhaka Metropolitan Police; Mizanur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner, Dhaka Metropolitan Police; Rakibul Hasan, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bhattara Thana; Saiful Islam, OC of Badda Thana; Professor Dr. Salauddin, Acting Vice-Chancellor of UIU; Professor Zulfiqar Ali, Registrar of UIU; Rumana Begum, Proctor of UIU; and student representative Md. Fahim along with 8-10 other students.
Earlier today, UIU students began blocking roads in the Natun Bazar area of the capital since morning to press for their demands. Around 11:00 AM, police baton-charged the protesters to disperse them, injuring several students, some of whom were hospitalized. Despite this, the students regrouped and resumed their blockade.
The students have stated that they will continue their protests until their demands are met. Meanwhile, they have announced a ‘Dhaka Blockade’ program for tomorrow, Sunday.
