25 OTT Platforms Banned in India Over Allegations of Promoting Obscene Content

The Indian central government has banned 25 Over-The-Top (OTT) platforms, including ALT Balaji, Ullu, and Big Shots, along with their associated mobile apps, for allegedly promoting ‘obscene,’ ‘vulgar,’ and in some cases, ‘pornographic’ content. The *Hindustan Times* reported this development on Friday, July 25, 2025, citing government sources.

Government officials stated that the action was taken due to serious violations of India’s digital content-related laws. Investigations revealed that the videos and web series uploaded on these platforms contained ‘sexually suggestive’ scenes, with some featuring nudity and detailed depictions of sexual activities. Authorities have classified such content as ‘pornographic in nature.’

A relevant official remarked, “Most of the content uploaded on these platforms lacked any social message, storyline, or theme. Instead, it revolved entirely around obscenity and vulgar scenes.” While a complete list of the banned platforms has not yet been officially released, government sources confirmed that the ban was enforced under the Information Technology Act, 2000, and the IT (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.
Previously, the Indian government had directed streaming platforms to adhere to ‘self-regulatory guidelines.’ However, this recent action signals stricter monitoring and enforcement in the future. Although the official list is pending, details have emerged through various technological agencies and officials in media reports.
