Actress Apu Biswas Granted Bail After Surrendering in Court

Popular actress Apu Biswas has been granted bail after surrendering in a case related to an attempted murder during the July mass uprising. The order was issued by Magistrate Mostafizur Rahman of Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court on Sunday.

Court sources stated that Apu Biswas surrendered before the court and applied for bail. The prosecution opposed her bail plea, but after hearing arguments from both sides, the court granted her bail. On June 2, Apu Biswas had secured anticipatory bail from the High Court for six weeks. She has now surrendered to the trial court and obtained bail. In March, a person named Enamul Haque filed a case in a Dhaka court, naming former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 283 others, including Apu Biswas, as accused in an attempted murder case. Haque claimed he was shot in Dhaka’s Bhatara area on July 19 during the unrest.
Following the court’s directive, the Bhatara Police Station later recorded the complaint as a First Information Report (FIR). The police stated that the case included the names of 17 actors, including Apu Biswas, Nusrat Faria, Nipun Akter, and Zayed Khan. The allegations claim that these individuals supported the then-ruling party and provided financial and other forms of support against the anti-discrimination movement.
