Autorickshaw Drivers’ Blockade Halts Traffic on Uttara-Mohakhali Road
Dhaka: CNG autorickshaw drivers staged a blockade in front of the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) office in Banani, completely halting traffic on the Uttara-Mohakhali road. The blockade began on Sunday morning. According to a Facebook post by the Gulshan Traffic Division, traffic on the northbound lane from Mohakhali partially resumed in the afternoon. Traffic authorities have advised commuters using this route to opt for alternative paths. Vehicles traveling from Uttara to Mohakhali or central Dhaka are being diverted via Kakali–Gulshan-2–Gulshan-1–Amtali or Gulshan-1–Police Plaza routes. The Dhaka Elevated Expressway remains open for use, and commuters traveling from Uttara to Tejgaon or Hatirjheel can utilize it. At the start of the day, the blockade caused a complete standstill of traffic on both sides of the road. Autorickshaw drivers from outside Dhaka staged a sit-in on the main road, pressing various demands. To maintain order and ensure public safety, additional police have been deployed in the area. Authorities are monitoring the situation and have urged commuters to follow the latest traffic advisories. Banani Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rasel Sarwar stated around 5:30 PM that the blockade by autorickshaw drivers from Dhaka district is still ongoing. Their demand is to operate autorickshaws in the metropolitan area, which is currently prohibited under existing laws.
