In a heartbreaking turn of events, Argentina’s women’s football team was eliminated from the Copa América Femenina semifinal by Colombia. Last year, Argentina’s men’s team defeated Colombia to claim their second consecutive Copa América title. Today, the women’s team had a chance to replicate that success and reach the final, but Colombia’s women exacted revenge in a thrilling encounter.
The match, held in Quito, Ecuador, ended goalless after regulation time, forcing a penalty shootout. Colombia emerged victorious with a 5–4 scoreline, securing their place in the final and a spot among the 16 teams for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
Argentina struggled throughout the match, lagging in possession and attacking opportunities. Despite Colombia’s dominance, they couldn’t break the deadlock in regulation time, leading to the decisive shootout. In the penalty shootout, both teams converted four of their first five shots. However, Colombia’s Wendy Bonilla scored in the sixth round, while Argentina’s Eliana Stábile failed to convert, sealing Colombia’s victory.
This is the 10th edition of the women’s Copa América. Brazil has won the title eight times, with Argentina’s sole victory coming in 2006 when they hosted the tournament. A Brazilian win this year would mark their fifth consecutive title.
