May 18, 2025 : Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of the interim government, will not be traveling to France and Spain to participate in two significant multilateral conferences. The French government invited him to the Third UN Ocean Conference, while the Spanish government extended an invitation for the UN Financing for Development (FfD4) Conference. However, Dr. Yunus has decided not to attend either event.
According to officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Third Ocean Conference is scheduled to take place in Nice, France, from June 9 to 13. French President Emmanuel Macron personally invited Dr. Yunus to the conference, but he will not participate. Instead, a delegation led by Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed will represent Bangladesh at the event.
Similarly, the FfD4 Conference is set to be held in Spain from June 30 to July 3. Despite an invitation from the Spanish government, Dr. Yunus will not attend. It is expected that a delegation from the Economic Relations Division (ERD) will represent Bangladesh at the conference.
A Foreign Ministry official explained that during the proposed France visit, Bangladesh requested bilateral meetings alongside the conference, but France did not confirm such engagements. As a result, attending solely for the conference was deemed unnecessary. Regarding the Spain visit, another official noted that a delegation from the ERD is likely to participate.
Notably, the Ocean Conference is co-hosted by France and Costa Rica, while the FfD4 Conference is the fourth in the UN’s series on financing for development.
