India to Face Greater Losses if Land Ports Halt Imports: Commerce Adviser

Economy | May 18, 2025 : Dhaka: No official confirmation has been received regarding the suspension of import-export activities through Indian land ports, said Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashiruddin. He stated that appropriate measures would be taken once formal information is obtained.

Speaking at a press briefing on contemporary issues at the Secretariat on Sunday (May 18), Bashiruddin addressed speculations circulating on social media. "Like many others, I have seen discussions about this on social media. We have not yet received the official report. Some information has been requested, and once we have it, we will be able to provide clearer insights," he said.
The Commerce Adviser emphasized that trade involves consumers and businesses from both countries, and any disruption would affect both sides. However, he noted that Indian businesses would likely face greater losses due to the trade imbalance, as India exports significantly more to Bangladesh than it imports. "If there is a restriction, Indian businesses will suffer more because they rely heavily on exports to Bangladesh," he added.
Bashiruddin also highlighted the government’s focus on enhancing the country’s trade capacity and expressed optimism about resolving the issue through dialogue.
Notably, a month after Bangladesh halted yarn imports through land ports, India has imposed restrictions on importing at least seven categories of goods, including ready-made garments and fruits, via land ports. India is now allowing imports from Bangladesh only through the sea ports of Kolkata and Mumbai.
